What is Selank?
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the naturally occurring immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Selank has been extensively studied for its combined anxiolytic and nootropic properties. Unlike many compounds that target either cognitive function or mood regulation, Selank has shown activity across both domains in published research, making it one of the more versatile peptides in the nootropic and neuropsychiatric research space.
Mechanism of Action
Selank modulates the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a key protein involved in neuronal growth, survival, and synaptic plasticity. It also influences the balance of monoamine neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Research has shown that Selank affects the activity of enkephalin-degrading enzymes, which may contribute to its anxiolytic effects by prolonging the action of endogenous opioid peptides. Additionally, Selank has demonstrated effects on IL-6 and T-helper cell balance, linking its immune-modulating properties to its neurological activity.
Research Applications
Selank has been studied across a range of neurological and immunological research areas. These include generalized anxiety and stress-related behavioral models, cognitive performance and memory consolidation, BDNF expression and neuroplasticity, immune system modulation through cytokine regulation, and neuroprotection under oxidative stress conditions. Research has also explored Selank in the context of neurodegenerative conditions and its potential synergistic effects when combined with other nootropic compounds.
